Space: A New Frontier For Therapeutic Innovation

In articles published on January 22, 2025 in the daily newspaper “La Verità” and the magazine “Panorama”, the importance of experiments conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) is emphasized in the search for new therapeutic strategies for syndromes and diseases that affect the human body—both in low Earth orbit and on Earth.

Professor Mariano Bizzarri, a leading expert in the field of space biomedicine, explains how microgravity can be used to identify critical disease mechanisms and new drug targets. In particular, citing an article published in the journal Biomed Research International, he highlights how cancer cells, under microgravity conditions, exhibit abnormal behavior, providing valuable insights for the design of innovative therapies.

Research in the field of nutrition is also underway, aiming to develop high-nutritional-value products targeted at preventing metabolic syndromes and diseases such as diabetes. Among these initiatives is the Myo-pasta project, developed in collaboration with ASI, CREA (the Research Center for Food and Nutrition), and the space biomedicine laboratory. This project focuses on the integration of functional ingredients into flour for pasta production. These ingredients could, in the future, be applied to other foods as well, offering strong support in preventing insulin resistance and diabetes.
