In recent days, a new study conducted by engineer Michela Cutigni has highlighted the possible issues that microgravity may cause on female reproductive health, an aspect so far overlooked compared to male health in space missions.
In particular, it highlights how the absence of weight alters ovarian function and endocrine regulation, compromising estrogen production and negatively affecting ovulation, the menstrual cycle, bone density, and cardiovascular health.
The Importance of the Study Conducted
The similarities between hormonal alterations induced by microgravity and those observed in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) open up new therapeutic perspectives, but research is still limited by the lack of adequate data and experimental models.
Understanding in depth the endocrine and functional mechanisms under microgravity conditions, including the combined effects of radiation and weightlessness, is fundamental to ensuring women’s health in future long-duration space missions.
