A new study opening up therapeutic possibilities has been conducted and published in the scientific journal “Dovepress”, by the Systems Biology Group, a laboratory led by Professor Mariano Bizzarri.
The research, personally conducted by Dr. Guglielmo Lentini, focused on the role of two isoforms, namely myo-inositol (myo-Ins) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI), in cellular processes linked to hormonal signaling in women with PCOS.
But what is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal condition affecting up to 10% of women of childbearing age. It manifests with menstrual irregularities, hyperandrogenism (acne, hirsutism), and ovulatory difficulties, often associated with insulin resistance. Recent evidence has highlighted the crucial role of inositols in regulating ovarian function and hormonal metabolism in this context.
The conducted research
Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol have direct effects on ovarian function and hormone metabolism in women with PCOS. Specifically, the former is primarily involved in ovarian hormonal balance, increasing aromatase activity, an enzyme active in estrogen synthesis; the latter, instead, at the ovarian level tends to increase androgen production and reduce aromatase, conditions that can worsen some PCOS symptoms.
Clinical studies have shown that the 40:1 ratio of myo-Ins to DCI is particularly beneficial, improving reproductive function in women with PCOS, even in the absence of insulin resistance. This combination of inositols has proven more effective than other pharmacological therapies, with positive effects on fertility and hormonal regulation.
Future perspectives
Inositol absorption is a key issue for its effectiveness, but combining it with α-lactalbumin has been shown to significantly improve its bioavailability. Although inositol treatment is promising and safe, further studies are needed to understand if it could be equally effective for different PCOS phenotypes. This approach could represent an innovative and personalized therapeutic alternative for patients.
