The Systems Biology Group Lab of the Department of Experimental Medicine at Università La Sapienza in Rome, led by Professor Mariano Bizzarri, in collaboration with Aurora Biosearch, a leading company dedicated for years to innovative solutions in epigenetics for oncology, neurology, dermatology, and regenerative medicine with a systems biology approach to complex systems and development, has patented an innovative mix of animal-derived microRNAs capable of inhibiting tumor growth and the formation of metastases.
The Research and Approaches Undertaken
These microRNAs, extracted from zebrafish and trout eggs, have demonstrated in vitro the ability to reprogram aggressive tumor cells, such as those of breast carcinoma, inducing the loss of malignant characteristics and promoting a return to a benign phenotype.
This approach is based on the principle of “Tumor Reversion”, a process aiming to transform malignant tumor cells into benign cells through epigenetic mechanisms, inspired by signals present in the embryonic microenvironment. The results obtained open new perspectives for the development of less invasive and more effective oncological therapies.
The conducted study has had significant resonance, to the point that several national newspapers, such as “La Repubblica” and “Sole24ore”, have covered it, highlighting precisely the research and work carried out by the Systems Biology Group.
